On May 15th, the village representative of So Lo Pun, Mr. Wong Hing Cheung, led a tour with 20 participants to his native village, introducing them to its long history. He displayed to his audience the rich interaction between Hakka settlements and their surrounding environments, and related stories of local villagers leaving their home to earn a living. Mr. Wong shared to his audience the So Lo Pun community’s vision for local revitalization and detailed the challenges they have faced in attempting to resume life there. He expressed his confidence that moving forward they would now overcome those obstacles and find a way to reanimate village life in So Lo Pun. Thereafter, the participants, under the guidance of Mr. Wong, helped clear weeds within the village boundary and planted fruit trees as part of an effort to explore the possibility of agricultural rehabilitation.

In the afternoon, participants arrived at Kuk Po village by speedboat. They were handed coupons by the project team which they were able to redeem at local eateries in exchange for a tasty Hakka meal. To deepen their understanding of local village history, they visited the village’s Grade III historical building, Kai Choi School and were able to take in the ongoing exhibition. The tour ended with discussion and sharing about the future of sustainable rural villages at the Sha Tau Kok Story House.
